3 Questions To Consider When Looking For Christian Healthcare

Healthcare Sharing is not insurance, and that means there is a learning curve when making the switch from traditional insurance. There are many benefits to joining a healthcare sharing program; however, there are certain people that may not be the best option.

Considering this, we put together some questions to research before making the switch. The first question to consider when looking for Christian Healthcare is:

  1. Do you understand what you are signing up for?

Healthcare Sharing offers a unique experience because you join a community agreeing to be responsible for their help and lifestyle choices. Regardless of which one you choose, you should understand that you will have to take some responsibility for your healthcare that you probably haven’t had to do before. Some require members to pay upfront and get reimbursed, while others have the bill sent directly to the Healthcare Sharing organization. Each Christian Healthcare works differently and has different guidelines to follow. These guidelines have to be agreed upon when joining, so read over them carefully so you have clear expectations.

So what’s the second question to consider when looking for Christian Healthcare? We’re glad you asked!

  1. What are my healthcare needs?

Most HealthShares are designed to help members with larger, unexpected medical expenses rather than annual visits and preventive care. Some offer virtual doctor visits that can also prescribe medications without you ever having to leave the home, this comes in handy when you travel or for those middle-of-the-night sicknesses. Do you have pre-existing needs? Almost all of the Healthcare Sharing organizations available today have limited sharing for pre-existing needs. Always ask what those limitations are before making your decision. Are you planning on having a baby soon? Check on maternity caps or what requirements must be met before sharing these medical needs with the members. Does it require you to stay in a specific network of doctors that your current providers aren’t in?

The third question to consider when looking for Christian Healthcare:

  1. Does it line up with my values?

Each sharing organization has a set of values and/or beliefs. There’s something special about joining a group of people that believe and have the same values. Most Christian Healthcare Sharing Organizations have a way for members to communicate and offer prayers and encouraging words. It’s powerful to have support from strangers often during the hardest seasons of your life. Read these over carefully. Keep in mind that when you sign your application, you are agreeing to join a community who have decided to live according to certain beliefs and be good stewards of their money and, most importantly, their health. If you are unsure of the meaning behind their statement of beliefs, call and ask for clarity. Signing up for something you haven’t taken the time to understand may set you up for disappointment in the future.

Considering Christian Healthcare

It’s true that Healthcare Sharing typically saves families a lot on their monthly healthcare costs but don’t join just for the savings. But there’s so much more value beyond the cost.

Understand the pros and cons of each organization before deciding which community to join. Like traditional insurance, there isn’t a one size fits all, but you want to make an educated and well-thought-out choice before taking the leap.

Don’t be afraid to gather a list of questions and call each sharing ministry to find out which one meets your needs.
