The availability of mail-order chemical abortion drugs is causing more harm to women nationwide. Women like Louisiana resident Rosalie Markezich have been subjected to horrifying abortion drug coercion by abusers who have easily obtained the pills online.
Thankfully, the state of Louisiana and Rosalie are pushing back on behalf of women nationwide in the State of Louisiana et al. v. U.S. Food and Drug Administration et al, which asks that the FDA reinstate basic safeguards on dangerous chemical abortion pills – namely, the requirement that a woman see a doctor in person before acquiring the pills, and prohibiting the mail-ordering of mifepristone. Unfortunately, the Trump Administration’s Department of Justice (DOJ) has already presented a roadblock in the case – just recently, the DOJ requested that the case be put on hold until the FDA concludes it’s review of mifepristone. The DOJ’s excuse? That mail-order mifepristone does not present immediate harm to women.
In mid-February, however, 21 state attorneys general and 60 members of Congress filed amicus briefs in the case supporting Rosalie and Louisiana. Their briefs underscore the urgency and importance with which the case should be handled, as well as the fact that mail-order mifepristone unequivocally presents immediate harm to women. Victims like Rosalie are living proof of this danger.
Unfortunately, not only is the Administration dragging its feet on this critical lawsuit, but while they wait, American taxpayers are footing the bill for mail-order abortion drugs that effectively constitute medical malpractice.
It is time to correct these past errors and ensure American tax dollars support life-affirming care.
