It’s the most wonderful time of the year, right? While the season seems to sparkle with lights and joy, it can also be the season of sniffles and coughing. After all, it’s flu season! It’s important to take precautions and to be proactive in preventing yourself from getting sick. At Solidarity HealthShare, we’re committed to helping our Members stay as healthy as possible year-round. That includes providing education and tips to help you manage your health during different seasons.
General Flu Season Facts
In the United States, the flu season begins around mid-October with the peak between December and February. The season can run as late as May on any given year. It’s important to note that it isn’t just the flu that’s making people sick during this time frame. The flu is just one of many viral infections that send thousands of people to the hospital each season.
2024-2025 final flu season numbers won’t be available for some time yet but states will likely have similar or slightly higher numbers of cases in comparison with the 2023-24 flu season. CDC statistics show that that season saw approximately 40 million illnesses, 18 million medical visits, 470,000 hospitalizations, and 28,000 deaths.
Tips for Curbing the Flu this Season
- Get Your Flu Shot
It might seem obvious, but the flu shot is one of the best (and most proven) ways to fight against the flu this season. The CDC recommendations suggest that anyone over the age of 6 months should get one. There are exceptions though. It’s important to know whether you fall into the category of people who should not get a flu shot.
- If you’re sick, stay home!
Easier said than done, right? Especially during the holiday season. No one wants to be home and miss the annual Christmas party or miss a celebration with friends and family. However, it’s important to rest and take care of yourself when you are sick. One of the best remedies for shortening the flu virus is by resting. Allowing your body that recuperation time will help you get back to celebrating the season in a quicker fashion!
- Wash Your Hands and Avoid Touching Your Hands and Mouth
Washing your hands multiple times throughout the day will help to protect against the spread of germs. If you don’t have soap and water readily available, an alcohol-based rub will also suffice in curbing the spread of germs. Similarly, between hand washing sessions, avoid touching your mouth. Germs spread easily through by touching contaminated surfaces. So take extra precautions to avoid that spread as best you can!
- Take Steps Toward Cleaner Air
Infusing your home or gathering space with cleaner air is another way to curb the spread of germs during flu season. Consider bringing fresh air in your home. Slightly open windows, home air purifiers, or outdoor gatherings (weather-dependent, of course!) are all great ways to accomplish that.
