Healthy Recipes for Kids
When it comes to healthy recipes for kids, it can be difficult to find variety, especially when it comes to picky eaters. While macaroni and cheese, chicken nuggets, and hot dogs can be easy meals, there are also a number of simple, healthy recipes that kids and the whole family will love. Check out a few of our favorites.
1. Breakfast Burritos
It’s important to start off the day in a nutritious way. For kids (and family members) who have various food preferences or sensitivities. We love this breakfast burrito recipe from Skinny Taste. It can be put together easily the night before to allow for a quick heating up in the morning and is filled with tasty, healthy items such as bell peppers, scrambled eggs, cheese, and bacon. For picky eaters or those with dietary restrictions, it is easy to remove or substitute items.
2. BBQ Carrot Dogs
Are you thinking that we meant to say “hot dogs?” Nope – BBQ Carrot Dogs are a healthy (and meat-free) alternative to a hot dog meal. Add ketchup, sauerkraut, and mustard as tasty toppings. This meal takes approximately 20 minutes to prep with some additional marinating time. The recipe can be prepped ahead of time for busy families. Check out the full recipe from EatingWell.
3. Oven Fried Fish and Chips
For many of us, “Fish Fridays” are a staple of the Lenten season. A healthier, homemade take is the delicious Oven Fried Fish and Chips from EatingWell. This recipe takes the popular recipe and reduces the calories to half the usual amount by adding a crispy cornflake crust and then baking it along with sliced potatoes. The total prep and cook time is about 45 minutes. It’s also an easy recipe to include young cooks in as some of the steps are very simple!
4. Hidden Veggie Mac and Cheese
We love a tasty macaroni and cheese dish and often find that even the pickiest of eaters will eat a bowl of this. However, box macaroni and cheese can contain preservatives, sodium and other items we don’t want our kids eating on a regular basis. That’s why we are delighted to come across this delicious recipe that includes a tasty creamy cheese sauce that’s packed with sweet potatoes, cauliflower, and sharp cheddar cheese. Try it out- we think you’ll agree that it’s a great option for all ages!
5. Veggie Tacos
Tacos are great (and quick!) weeknight meals for a lot of families. After all, who doesn’t love “Taco Tuesday?” While tacos can be a tasty meal choice for picky eaters, they can also be filled with less than healthy items. We found a delicious alternative that kids and adults alike will love, tacos filled with vegetables, chiles, and black beans. Check out this great recipe from Taste of Home.
