Investigation into Biden Official
Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives are raising the alarm. Top HHS officials exerted inappropriate influence over the decision to lower the age limits for transgender surgeries to be conducted on minors.
The recently launched investigation of HHS revealed that, in June 2024, Rachel Levine, HHS’s assistant secretary for health, pressured the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) to drop its surgery age requirement from its September 2022 Standards of Care update. Levine is biologically male by birth but identifies as female.
Official Pressured to Lower Age Limits for Transgender Surgeries
Previously, WPATH recommended to lower the minimum age for cross-sex hormone treatments to 14, transgender mastectomies to 15, breast augmentation and facial surgery to 16, and transgender genital surgeries to 17. However, Levine’s office wanted these ages removed from the guidance entirely. They argued that any age limits for transgender treatments under 18 would prompt “devastating legislation for trans care.”
Meanwhile, more than 20 states across the nation are increasing age restrictions on gender-transition procedures. There is a lack of evidence that such “treatments” actually reduce gender dysphoria. These states recognize the danger of hastily adopting politically motivated health guidelines without the proper research to support them. After all, medical providers have a responsibility to first do no harm. Jumping straight to surgical intervention without proper research does not align with that tenet.
