On December 12th, 2025, Illinois Governor JB Pritzer signed a new bill legalizing assisted suicide The dystopian bill, SB 1950, allows terminally ill state residents to use lethal injection to end their lives and makes Illinios the 12th state, in addition to Washington, D.C., to legalize assisted suicide.
The bill faced fierce opposition from Illinois Catholic bishops and other groups. Some warned that it would harm people with disabilities, while others raised concerns that the exorbitant costs of modern healthcare could make Americans succumb to “the subtle but dangerous pressure to end our lives rather than get the care we need.”
This last point is especially poignant considering the current lack of price transparency in the United States, which has resulted in an increasing number of Americans facing medical debt or delaying care due to unforeseen or unaffordable costs.
Not only does the law endanger Illinois residents’ lives—SB 1950 also threatens the conscience rights of medical providers and insurers in the state, who may be forced to participate in unethically ending the lives of the very patients they are called to serve.
