Anyone purchasing health insurance from Healthcare.gov or other state based marketplaces are about to experience skyrocketing premiums next year, up as high as 75 percent.
During the pandemic, enhanced subsidies helped to decrease the cost of premiums for plans under the Affordable Care Act, which boosted enrollment since people preferred the lower premiums. In January 2025, enrollment for ACA insurance hit a record 24 million. Enrollees are those who cannot get health insurance through their jobs and don’t qualify for Medicaid/Medicare.
But the pandemic-era subsidies are set to expire in 2026 and cause premiums to spike back up. Those who currently pay $60 a month for health insurance will have to pay $105 a month in 2026.
The Congressional Budget Office estimates that this change will increase the number of uninsured people over the next decade to 4.2 million, due in part because those who are generally healthy may not want to pay the higher premiums and may opt for no healthcare coverage at all. Only unhealthy people would remain on the ACA program, which in turn will costs health insurance companies more money.
According to the Republican Study Committee, “enhanced subsidies only perpetuate a never-ending cycle of rising premiums and federal bailouts with taxpayers forced to foot the bill.”
