Out of Control Costs Threatening Benefits for Workplace Health Insurance Plans
The cost of workplace health insurance is overwhelming families, especially those who already struggling to pay grocery bills, cover college tuition and simply provide for their loved ones.
Some are predicting that their employers will pare down health insurance benefits in the coming months to save money. In 2025, health care costs will skyrocket nearly eight percent, according to the Business Group on Health. This cost increase estimates that roughly 22% of employers will seek to change their health insurance provider. Employees may notice higher premiums, deductibles or copays as a result.
What is Causing the Increase?
Companies say the following factors are the largest contributors to high health insurance costs:
- GLP-1 weight-loss drugs like Wegovy and Ozempic
- High-cost therapies
- Increase in prevalence of mental health conditions
- Fragmentation in the delivery system
- Poor quality providers
- Fraud, waste and abuse
Higher demand for care at hospitals and clinics is also putting pressure on health insurance vendors. Attempts to control demand in the market through step therapy, drug formulation changes and other measures have proven insufficient.
What Other Options Are There?
Health sharing ministries such as Solidarity HealthShare have an important role to play in alleviating financial stress from both employers and patients. Our healthcare ministry strongly believes patients should always have access to affordable prices and quality care as opposed to always having to worry about the cost of care. We negotiate fair and reasonable prices for our Members so that they can receive the highest quality care at the lowest cost.
Unable to pay an emergency medical cost? With Solidarity, Members can ask each other to share for unexpected expenses in times of need. Since 2016, more than 46,000 Members have received the care they needed through our system of sharing, through which each person lightens the financial burden for fellow Members.
