Medicare Advantage plans are undergoing significant changes as health insurers adjust their coverage options, benefits, and costs for 2027. According to a recent article from Healthcare Dive, new federal data shows that while the overall number of available plans remains relatively stable, many insurers are reducing their offerings and increasing certain out-of-pocket costs. For those who rely on Medicare for their primary coverage, this changing landscape may be problematic, especially as many seniors survive on a fixed income.
Fewer Plan Options in Some Areas
Medicare Advantage, also known as Medicare Part C, is an alternative to Original Medicare offered through private insurance companies approved by the federal government. To provide comprehensive coverage, many of these Medicare plans also include dental and vision.
Healthcare Dive reports that the total number of Medicare Advantage plans nationwide is expected to decrease slightly, from 5,553 in 2026 to 5,532 in 2027. However, this small overall decline masks larger reductions being made by individual insurers. The largest Medicare Advantage insurer, UnitedHealthcare, has announced plans to eliminate approximately 690 plans, while the second largest is cutting around 2,400. Other insurers are also withdrawing from certain counties, meaning some beneficiaries may need to find new coverage for the upcoming year.
Rising Out-of-Pocket Costs
Although monthly premiums may remain relatively stable for many enrollees, other healthcare expenses are increasing. Recent statistics show that the average maximum out-of-pocket limit for Medicare Advantage plans is projected to rise by approximately 10% in 2027. Prescription drug deductibles will also see increases.
These changes are potentially problematic because the lowest-cost programs may be all that a senior on a fixed income can afford, but might not cover what they need. These lower-cost programs don’t necessarily account for the amount of appointments, prescription needs, and additional treatments a patient may require. To add further insult to injury, some insurers are also beginning to limit their networks for Medicare plans, which creates problems for those who may need to see a specific doctor or specialist.
Why Insurers Are Making Changes
Health insurers are changing their offerings in response to higher-than-expected medical spending and pressure to improve profitability. By reducing the number of plans they offer and adjusting benefits, companies are attempting to manage expenses while maintaining sustainable operations.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) maintains that beneficiaries will continue to have broad access to Medicare Advantage options. However, the differences between individual plans make it important for consumers to review their coverage carefully.
How Beneficiaries Can Prepare
Medicare open enrollment runs from October 15 through December 7, 2026. During this period, beneficiaries can compare plans and make changes to their coverage for 2027.
Before selecting a plan, individuals should review monthly premiums, deductibles, maximum out-of-pocket limits, prescription drug coverage, provider networks, and supplemental benefits. More information is available through the official Medicare website.
As they explore the options, they should also consider what is manageable for a budget on a fixed income and what other options may exist so that they are not faced with unrealistic costs.
