Each October, the Catholic Church in the United States observes Respect Life Month, a time dedicated to reflecting on the dignity and value of every human life. In 2026, the theme is “Mary, Mother of Life,” encouraging Catholics to follow Mary’s example in protecting and respecting human life at every stage and in all circumstances.
In a September 29 announcement, Bishop Daniel E. Thomas, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Committee on Pro-Life Activities, called on Catholics to deepen their prayers and take action regarding abortion pills. “Today, with easier access to abortion pills, the abortion rate is tragically climbing, along with increased health risks,” said Bishop Thomas. “This means that more women, many of whom have been misinformed about the nature and risks of the abortion pill, will have an abortion alone at home, without any medical supervision. It also sets up additional opportunities for exploitation by violent partners or human traffickers. These affronts to human dignity demand our response.”
Because of telehealth appointments, many women can now receive abortion pills in the mail without even having to visit a doctor’s office. This increasing availability of abortion pills raises a variety of concerns about women’s health, access to accurate medical information, and the circumstances in which abortions take place – especially considering that recent data shows that 65% of clinician-provided abortions in the U.S. were medication abortions.
Turning Prayer Into Action
This month, the USCCB encourages Catholics to respond through both spiritual reflection and practical advocacy. Bishop Thomas urged the faithful to continue praying throughout October and to participate in efforts to raise awareness about the dangers of abortion pills. The initiative also encourages people to contact pharmacies and pharmaceutical companies to communicate their concerns. Through these efforts, the Church hopes to promote greater awareness and encourage action that is consistent with its commitment to the sanctity of human life.
Following Mary’s Example
The theme “Mary, Mother of Life” offers a spiritual foundation for this year’s observance. Mary serves as a model of faith, compassion, and care for human life. By reflecting on her example, Catholics are encouraged to approach the challenges surrounding abortion with prayer, conviction, and concern for mothers and their children.
Respect Life Month also provides an opportunity for parishes and communities to consider how they can support women facing difficult pregnancies and strengthen practical assistance for families in need.
A Call to Renewed Commitment
Bishop Thomas’s message is a reminder that respecting life involves more than words. It calls for ongoing prayer, informed discussion, advocacy, and compassionate support for mothers and children. As Catholics observe Respect Life Month, they are invited to renew their commitment to defending human dignity and building communities where every life is treated with care and respect.
